How to investigate your content's performance

Content Explorer Table uses Pi's Organic ranking to focus on how content, not Search Terms, performs on the Search Engine Ranking Pages (SERPs).

Unlike other SEO analysis tools, this tool places content as the primary dimension, allowing you to analyse content no matter how many search terms or SERP features it appears for.

It's an excellent way to see all the content that has ever positioned for your group of search terms.

Tip: Look at your own website as well as your competitors!

How does it work?

Content Explorer Table loads organic positional data for all search terms within a Workspace or Campaign.

It then pulls back every returning URL the particular site has positioned for amongst the top 100 results within the selected time range. For example, over a 7-day period in a daily workspace, the table could be analysing up to 2.8 million different URLs.

* Note: Content Explorer Table currently only works on Google desktop and mobile search engines.

Where to find Content Explorer Table

You can find the Content Explorer Table in the Content section of the navigation menu wherever you are in the app:

How to use Content Explorer Table

Choose the workspace, search engine and site you wish to analyse. All sites in the workspace and at the account level appear in the list, or, add a custom URL:

Click 'Explore':

The Content Explorer Table contains the following dimensions and metrics:

Dimension:

  • Returning URL

Metrics:

  • SERP features

  • Terms

  • Top Position

  • Mean Position

  • Mode Position

Returning URL

This is the page analysed for your selected site. Click the URL to go to the page:

SERP Features

Shows you which features this page returned on the SERPs. Hover over the SERP feature icon to reveal the feature’s name:

Terms

Indicates the number of search terms that appear on this page. Hover over the information icon to reveal the search terms:

Top Position

This number is the highest position for any feature on any term for the selected date range:

Mean Position

This number is the average position across all terms and features for the selected date range:

Mode Position

This number is the most frequently appearing position across all terms and features for the selected date range:

Date Picker

Lets you choose the specific date or range to analyse. Use the calendar on the left to choose a custom range or the drop-down on the right for a set period:

For comparison, a custom range can also be selected or the previous period or year from the drop-down:

Filters

The Advanced Table Filters allow you to narrow the information to analyse by selecting a specific dimension or metric:

Multiple filters can be applied. Note - how many are applied is indicated in the yellow circle at the top:

Columns

Choose which metrics you want to be displayed in the table. Tick/untick from the boxes in the drop-down then select ‘Apply’:

Secondary Dimension

Select an extra dimension to display in the table. E.g. display the actual search terms instead of the number of terms. Select from the drop-down then select ‘Apply’.

Note - a warning on the tab reminds you a secondary dimension has been selected:

CSV Download

Download the contents of the Content Explorer Table as a CSV:

Save as insight

Found a success you’d like to share with the whole team? Need to bring something interesting to the right person’s attention? Save as insight lets you save your findings for yourself as a personal discovery or with other members of your team on the same workspace. You can find save as insight at the top of the tool:

Next Step Actions

If you see something of interest that you would like to analyse using some of our other tools, at the end of each row of the table is the actions column. Use these actions to be taken to our tools with your data preloaded and ready to view. This is a great way to navigate our tools without having to remember and input the data you want to view each time.

Using the next step actions feature in the SERP explorer table allows you to load data in the following tools:

'Apply Selection to' actions

You can check a selection of data to view in Position Explorer Table and Content Diagnostics by ticking the check box and hovering over the 'Apply selection to' dropdown menu.

Action Required

If you see this symbol, it means an action is required before you can analyse the data in this tool. Clicking it will open a window that will allow you to make these changes before entering the tool.
