Search Volume and how we collect it

Market Data is an estimate of the search volume a search term gets in a particular market. Market Data also includes Competiton and Cost-Per-Click.

How is it collected?

Google Keyword Planner publishes the search volume for the previous month between the 10-15th of each month. Once they’ve published the new data, we scrape Google Keyword Planner downloading 36 months of search volume history for that search term.

New terms

New search terms added to the system are added to the top of the priority queue and are collected within 48 hours of being added to the system.

Search Volume Status

In our tools, sometimes you will see alternatives to Search Volume depending on the status of that Search Terms. There are a number of reasons for this:

Pending Data - This means the term has recently been added to our system and market data is still pending. New terms are collected within 48 hours of being added to the system, if you are still seeing the pending status after this point, contact our support team.

Unavailable - This means we are unable to collect this market data. We collect our data directly from Google Keyword Planner, meaning we can only provide market data available in the Keyword Planner. In most cases, unavailable terms are likely to be such things as adult terms, although this can be random sometimes as seemingly regular terms can become unavailable through Google.

Invalid - You will see an invalid market data status if we cannot get market data for a Search Term. This is generally caused by issues with the Search Term itself, such as punctuation or a character.

Close Variant

Close variants are either a plural version of your query (e.g. ‘Mobile phone’ vs ‘Mobile phones’) or a keyword phrase with a similar theme or composition (e.g. ‘SEO’ vs ‘Search engine optimisation').

A warning triangle will appear beside the volume of any close variant keyword.

Hovering over this icon will show you the root Search Term for the search volume provided. A root Search Term is what Google says is the canonical originator of the Search Term.

Where to find Market Data?

All Market Data including Search Volume, Competition and Cost-Per-Click can be viewed using our Position Explorer Table tool.

Market Data is also used to calculate our Organic Value Score (OVS) which is used in Market Intelligence reports.
